Having just returned from an 8 night cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas, I’m having a little trouble with re-entry. The diagnosis is obvious: PCD (Post-Cruise Depression.) I don’t expect sympathy, but a little understanding would be nice. I write this so that you may appreciate that bliss can have consequences..

It is 7:30 a.m. on Friday March 2nd and I leave for the airport in 5 hours. However, along with finishing packing (why is it that the personal hygiene and medications are such a major packing deal now when they were not 25 years ago?) and cleaning up, I promised this column to my new most favorite site...

Stand on the corner of Sixth and Tennessee streets. Walk south to 11th  Street, east to New Hampshire Street, then north to Sixth Street and turn west across Massachusetts Street back to Tennessee Street. Note the highest points--- the bank tower at Ninth and Massachusetts streets, the church spires, the Eldridge Hotel...

I waved cheerfully at my husband as he pulled away from the curb at the airport. I was early. I’d been assured by the efficient robot voice at the airline info line before leaving home that my flight was “On Time.” I had my passport and e-ticket in a handy-dandy pouch around my neck.  I was flying to Germany, via Chicago. When you think of Daytona Beach, what comes to mind? Speedway? Spring Break? Biker Week? Pier? Culture? Arts? Symphony? Museums? Spas? Sailing? Golf? Fine dining? Miles and miles of hard-packed sand and endless waves? Nature? Endangered sea turtles? Marine life rehabilitation centers? Freshwater springs?...

“You know fall is coming when the fireweed tops out,” explained Tess, the pretty red-haired waitress in the dining car on the Seward-Anchorage run of the Alaska Railroad. I was savoring my glazed salmon with wild rice pilaf, baby green beans and a chardonnay. I’d given up taking pictures...

It's after 10 p.m. and I'm watching the sunset from the back deck of the Snow Goose brewpub in downtown Anchorage. Pink and orange and cream form pastel layers. It looks fake, a wanna-be artist’s rendition of a sunset...

I’m waiting on a call from the Eagle River Nature Center as to whether the salmon have arrived. Ranger Rick is hiking out now to take a look. If they have, I’ll hop in the car and drive out there (about 50 miles, but some back roads so takes a while) and hike in a mile or so to a river where the salmon are returning to spawn...
